You Don’t Need a Special Occasion to Become Her

Note 009

Today, I wore the dress.

Not to a wedding. Not to a brunch. Not to a birthday party.

Just to work.

A few days ago, I found a dress on clearance for $19.99. I’d been eyeing it for weeks. Truthfully, I’ve been buying clothes like that for a while now. Clothes that fit the woman I’m becoming instead of the woman I’ve always been.

The dress wasn’t really about the dress.

For the past few years, I’ve been reinventing myself.

Not just physically, although I’ve been working out and taking better care of my health. As a woman navigating midlife and perimenopause, I want to do everything I can to stay healthy and strong. But the changes have been deeper than that.

I’ve been growing emotionally.

Spiritually.

Mentally.

I’ve been learning who I am outside of old habits, old beliefs, and old versions of myself.

The funny thing is, sometimes becoming a new version of yourself starts with something as simple as getting dressed.

For months, I had excuses.

“I don’t have the right shoes.”

“I’ll wear it when I have somewhere special to go.”

“I’ll save it for another day.”

But yesterday, I decided something.

If I’m going to buy clothes for the woman I’m becoming, I need to start showing up as her.

No more waiting.

Yesterday, I wore a pair of pants I’d been saving.

Today, I wore the dress.

And if I’m being honest, I felt beautiful.

Confident.

Feminine.

I also felt a little nervous.

Part of me wondered if someone would say something.

As it turns out, someone did.

A woman walked into the office and asked, “Why are you so dressed up to sit in the office by yourself? Are you waiting on someone?”

I smiled and said, “No. I’m not dressed up.”

But her question stayed with me.

Why do we believe we need a reason to wear the dress?

Why do we think looking nice requires an occasion?

Why do we save our favorite clothes for someday?

Somewhere along the way, many of us stopped getting dressed because it made us feel good and started waiting for permission from an event, a holiday, a date, or another person.

We’ve become so accustomed to comfort that putting on real clothes can feel unusual.

But maybe the real question is this:

What if the occasion is simply being alive today?

What if becoming the woman you want to be doesn’t happen all at once?

What if it starts with small decisions?

The dress.

The shoes.

The confidence to stop waiting.

Because how we show up in the world often reflects how we see ourselves.

And when we begin to see ourselves differently, the world starts responding differently too.

Today’s lesson wasn’t about fashion.

It was about permission.

Permission to stop waiting for a special occasion.

Permission to wear the dress.

Permission to become her now.

A Note for Today

You don’t need a special occasion to become the woman you’re becoming.

A Little Something to Think About:

What’s one thing you’ve been saving for a “special occasion”? Wear it, use it, or enjoy it this week.
